Re: Joe Thomas with 49ers

Ego trip for Thomas ... especially after brokering for a tough job and fickle fans who wanted a winner as the economy was getting worse. He couldn't have known the owner would be as hands on as he was ... Baltimore could have been a champion had Oak and Pitts killed each other off in a divisional ga...

Re: Top, and Worst, Ten teams of the 14-game era, '61-thru-'77?

Those Philly years from 61 - 77, the Eagles gave up on players like Jurgensen, McDonald, Matson(career ending), Baughn, Scarpati, Cross, Poage, Jackson, Young, Rossovitch, and Zabel, that could have helped the team win more games but youth and inexperience ruled out ...

Re: Sandwich year teams

The ultimate sandwich disappointment was the Vikings in 1972. Going 7-7 in Tarkentons' return, just refueled speculation about his inability to get a team into the playoffs, after a four season postseason run. That's why the Vikings 1973 season was so huge. They got back on top but once the Dolphins...

Re: NFL "what-if" scenarios thread

Haha ... that's true Bryan, yet as you know, the Colts were a lot better at the end of that season. Unitas actually threw well against the Dolphins in the AFC Champ game in 1971 but just couldn't get them on the board after O' Brien missed early FG attempts.

Re: Best Teams To Miss The Playoffs

With a chance to win the division, the 76' Bengals blew both games against the Steelers. They also could have beaten the Raiders to win the Central but lost. At least they beat the Steelers in late 1977. They may have overlooked the Oilers or simply had a letdown ... these losses, as well as a 75' l...

Re: Best Teams To Miss The Playoffs

The 67' Colts were the top team, but the 77' Bengals just missed as well. After whipping the Steelers, they had the division if they could beat the Oilers the final weekend but Houston got to Anderson with their pass rush that day and won, giving Phillips another winning season.

Re: NFL "what-if" scenarios thread

Had Baltimore won their division in 1971 like they should have, a very interesting match-up in KC for the playoffs. Due to the weather and Municipal Stadium, Unitas I believe, would have had a good throwing day with the Colts winning a close, defensive battle. I feel the Colts wouldn't have struggle...

Re: NFL "what-if" scenarios thread

The weakest Raiders team in the Madden era was his last in 1978. Injuries and bad play on the offensive line(Marvin) allowed Stabler to get hit too frequently as he had a bad year. With an 8-4 record, the Raiders lost three straight before ending the year with a victory over Minnesota. The defense w...

Re: Kirk Cousins (R.I.P. Vikings career?) - How did he do?

The drafting of Penix makes me feel Cousins will get two seasons and that's it. The Falcons probably felt the Vikings didn't put enough pressure or urgency on him but it takes a team to win it all.

Re: Kirk Cousins (R.I.P. Vikings career?) - How did he do?

Good call on McCarthy, RC ...

Meanwhile, Atlanta has had an interesting off-season, turning down Belichick for Morris, giving a bunch of money to Cousins, who now has to win games while mentoring the #8th overall pick in the draft in QB Penix ... I dunno
