Re: Were 10-6 49ers of '91 as good as record indicated?
Good points by all, yet Merton Hanks had big-play ability on those defenses for SF. Norton was better for Dallas but still contributed to three straight SB wins, not too shabby. The Niners had every chance to win the NFC in 90, 92, 93, 95, 96, 97 and 98 but floundered once they played better defense...

Re: 2024 Obituaries
If career assistant coaches ever have a shot at HOF election, Joe Collier is certainly worthy. Very resourceful and successful.
Head coaching career would have been much better had Kemp, Powell, Sestak and others stayed healthy ...

Re: Michael Strahan- Did he only make the HOF because of his storybook ending?
Being in NY hasn't helped other deserving players for the HOF. Cuff, Conerly, Shofner, Patton, Katcavage, Barnes and T Barber, are still waiting for their chance. Strahan was deserving. RIP Aaron Thomas ... An underrated, career receiver for the Giants, including others like Kyle Rote, Amani Toomer,...

Re: 2024 Obituaries
RIP Aaron Thomas
A talented receiver listed as a tight end. Imagine if a contender could have gotten him from the Giants, when they floundered but Tarkenton needed him on the team. TDs to receptions ratio was pretty good and he only lost one or two fumbles his entire career.

Re: The 6 Losses of the 1991 SF 49ers
Steve Young could come off the bench with no pressure and do a great job. Now the starter, he had to adjust to the highs and lows of a season with high team expectations. Steve Bono came in and saved their season, similar to Purdy relieving Garappollo in 2022.

Re: The best Buck Shaw HC'd squad?
It has to be the 1960 squad because they won it all. The 53' squad might have been more talented but not tougher. The 48' team couldn't beat out Cleveland for the division title but at least they got to play for a championship in 1949.

Re: Joe Thomas with 49ers
Ego trip for Thomas ... especially after brokering for a tough job and fickle fans who wanted a winner as the economy was getting worse. He couldn't have known the owner would be as hands on as he was* ... Baltimore could have been a champion had Oak and Pitts killed each other off in a divisional g...

Re: Top, and Worst, Ten teams of the 14-game era, '61-thru-'77?
Those Philly years from 62 - 77, the Eagles gave up on players like Jurgensen, McDonald, Matson(career ending), Baughan, Scarpati, Cross, Poage, Jackson, Young, Rossovitch, and Zabel, that could have helped the team win more games but youth and inexperience ruled out ...

Re: Sandwich year teams
The ultimate sandwich disappointment was the Vikings in 1972. Going 7-7 in Tarkentons' return, just refueled speculation about his inability to get a team into the playoffs, after a four season postseason run. That's why the Vikings 1973 season was so huge. They got back on top but once the Dolphins...

Re: NFL "what-if" scenarios thread
Haha ... that's true Bryan, yet as you know, the Colts were a lot better at the end of that season. Unitas actually threw well against the Dolphins in the AFC Champ game in 1971 but just couldn't get them on the board after O' Brien missed early FG attempts.
