Re: 1971 NFL season discussion
George Allen's first season in Washington. NFL Films did a really good overview of their season that used to be on YouTube. Not sure if it still is. Basically knocked the Rams out of the playoffs on a late Monday Night Football win. I was going to mention Allen too. Besides his arrival, the two thi...

Re: 1971 NFL season discussion
New Orleans made their wins count (Rams, 49ers, Cowboys- plus the Oakland tie that felt like a win)

Re: 1984 49ers = Overrated
Then how do you explain better Cleveland/Houston rosters losing to basically an average 1 man team? Simple. The Oilers were chokers with no killer instinct, and the Browns (in their first two AFC Title losses to Denver) made key mistakes and were too conservative at times. Denver had no killer inst...

Re: 1994 Steelers vs. 1997 Steelers
The 1995 Colts were even luckier. They were 2 huge comebacks and a pick 6 before halftime from 6-10. Honestly, they both were. However, that was the era where the more talented AFC teams (Denver, Raiders, Houston in 91-93) would always underachieve, and it would open the door for teams like this an...

Re: 1984 49ers = Overrated
I said it before and I’ll say it again- it was a top heavy conference. Outside of the 85 Bears/96 Packers, it was basically the 49ers and NFCE carrying the load Oh, definitely. You can't be an AFC Champion being average to weak. Those Bronco teams were average. They had John Elway and not a whole l...

Re: 1984 49ers = Overrated
The Cowboys won in spite of Johnson? I don't think so ... he put the fear of God into his players and they responded. Aikman felt the team was too lax under Switzer and Gailey. Johnson could get away with gambles and hunches better than any HC today. Too bad he couldn't get the same results with th...

Re: 1994 Steelers vs. 1997 Steelers
Oh please. 97 KC was a fraud. How that team went 13-3 with the 4th best roster in their own division is beyond me. OAK/SEA had better players yet the Chiefs got by on Marty smoke and mirrors luck. Horrible running game, Grbac and Gannon, only 1 WR worth a damn (washed up Andre Rison) KC was the wea...

Re: 1984 49ers = Overrated
You can't be an AFC Champion being average to weak. The teams simply didn't have the depth or coaching that the NFC had. Far better offensive lines than the AFC, though the Niners line wasn't dominate, which makes their offensive prowess even more impressive. Coaching? Yeah right Dallas won in spit...

Re: Weakest above-500 team to NOT make the playoffs?
1988 Patriots
9-7 with a -34 PD
Beat the Bengals/Bears but got clocked by MIN/HOU
Had a chance to clinch in week 16 at Denver (who was coming off a 42-14 clubbing in Seattle) but lost at Mile High in what turned out to be Tony Dorsett’s final game
