Re: 1965 NFL Playoff at Green Bay

I saw the game on TV. After the early fumble Bill Anderson had the best game of his career. He made eight receptions, several during the key late-game drives. Bill Anderson played for the Washington Redskins from 1958-63, making the Pro Bowl twice, 1959 and 1960. He left the NFL in 1964 to be an ass...

Re: Chiefs at Raiders-Detail on 1969 Title

Everyone should be aware that Raiders QB Darryl Lamonica smashed his hand on KC DE Aaron Brown's helmet in the 3rd quarter. After coming out for a series in favor of George Blanda he returned with his throwing hand quite swollen and then preceded to toss the 3 picks. He also got hurt the following ...

Re: 2023 Hall of Very Good Finalists

The Terry Metcalf I'm looking at never had a season over 1200 scrimmage yards. It doesn't appear he ever got a bellcow workload; he also never had more than 20 carries in a game. Is his returning considered the most relevant data point in his HOVG favor? I recall Greg Pruitt in the mid-70s being qu...

Bill Groman Lionel Taylor Bob Hayes? Shofner and Powell came close Now don't be sad, 'cause two out of three ain't bad. John Jefferson? He had the start of a Hall of Fame career until he held out and was traded to Green Bay. John Jefferson was one of Howard Slusher's clients, whose advice was to &q...

Re: Herschel has found some rivals...

Hadl's dropoff seemed just as out of nowhere, too. Hadl hurt his back pushing his car in Marina del Rey. The back affected his throwing. His back was problematic in late-74 mid-1974ish ... he couldn't get as much on the ball as he did in early 1973 or before... he was known for having a very good (...

Re: TCM football movies (Tue, Sep 5, 8pm ET)

Plimpton went to Lions training camp in 1963. Alex Karras was suspended that year and was not there. The movie is set in 1967 and you see rookies like Lem Barney and Mike weger, while the head coach is Joe Schmidt not George Wilson. Plimpton did not appear in a preseason game with the Lions, only a...

Re: Worst RBs/WRs with a 1000 yard season?

Though I felt he was a true versatile professional, John Cappelletti never could put it together to make the impact as a runner, people might have expected. He joins a loaded Rams team and gets lost in a rotation of good backs, then later, is primarily a blocker for a pass happy Chargers offense. H...

Re: TCM football movies (Tue, Sep 5, 8pm ET)

North Dallas Forty was released in August 1979. During the 1970s, along with announcing, Don Meredith had several acting roles. I read that Meredith was offered the Seth Maxwell role in the movie but turned it down. He said, "I was afraid people would think that character was me." It was n...

Re: Worst RBs/WRs with a 1000 yard season?

Steve Owens had an injury-plagued career as well after playing well in 1971 for the Lions. Tony Reed had a similar career with KC as a runner without the Heisman Trophy. A good second year in 1978 before succumbing to injuries. In the 1974 Thanksgiving Day Game against Denver, Steve Owens had a 27-...

Re: Herschel has found some rivals...

That is probably the most similar precedent to the Wilson trade. Hadl's dropoff seemed just as out of nowhere, too. Albeit more typical of QBs in their mid-30s in that era; I can't imagine GB thought it'd get more than 3 quality years out of him, so what possessed them to give that much?! Dam Devin...
