Re: Sometimes all you can do is chuckle

Benny Friedman sounds like a goldmine of quotability btw. Anywhere one can find a repository of Bennyisms? There's a nice book called "Pro Football's Rag Days," by Bob Curran, which appeared in the late 1960s or early '70s. It's nothing but interviews with a bunch of players from the earl...

Re: Carolina Panthers media guides

I have the Panthers media guides on pdf from 2011 forward. If you can find pdfs online, please let me know as I am compiling a library of media guides, otherwise, you might want to go to the Ebay or the Amazon.

Re: Bears Throwbacks

I agree there's probably not much the Bears can do about it, and that it's lame to go back on your word and unretire a number. The Redskins have a good system. Their only retired number is Sammy Baugh (33), but they work very hard to avoid giving out the numbers of iconic players like Darrell Green...

Re: Bears Throwbacks

Has the NFL ever un-retired a number before? I don't think so. The NFL doesn't retire numbers; it actually discourages teams from doing so. The only team I can remember un-retiring a number is Demver with #18. Frank Tripucka gave his blessing for Peyton Manning to wear it when he signed with the Br...

Re: Bears Throwbacks

Number 7 was a pretty obscure (other than Bob Waterfield and Ron Jaworski) number for star quarterbacks to wear until John Elway made it trendy, now it has become (next to 12) the second-biggest quarterback number as Michael Vick, Ben Roethlisberger, Flutie, Randall Cunningham, Esiason, and a bunch...

Re: Bears Throwbacks

Love the throwbacks the Bears are wearing tonight that hearken back to the Monsters of Midway years. I know there are probably purists who think the look isn't close to the same as they had during the 30s-40s glory years, but love they're paying homage. Unfortunately, they've also really limited th...

Re: Game books update

I have a major announcement on the game books, I have just received them but have not really gone thru them yet, but I have the score sheet documents for the Colts from 1953-96, and am waiting to hear back from them on the game books. The guy I talked to at the Colts didn't seem to understand what I...

Re: Perhaps for my own sanity and no one else's

Seconded. Also one of the funniest plays I've ever watched, and from a guy I'd never expect to do that. Worst comes to worst, just catch the dang ball, Russ. It sorta reminded me of the Garo Yepremian-Mike Bass play in that Yepremian was trying to bat it or something and it went into Bass's hands. ...

Re: Special teams finalists

anecdotally he was. Honors-wise he was. No punter has more testimonials that I know of. I think the numbers show he was the best of his era, call it the post-1974 rule change era to the time when punters began more placement punting. I think 1985 or so was when that was The numbers show he was ahea...

Re: Special teams finalists

Lechler 20th in net, 1st in gross. I know there are better ways, but for a thumbnail---his 8.5 difference between gross and net is telling, Also 5 blocks is not awful, about average .35% but 7 TDs isnt great His average return was 11 yards when league average was 8 or so That's the problem I always...
