Comparing '67-thru-'75 Raiders to '05-thru-'13 Patriots

Post by 74_75_78_79_ »

Two remarkable near-decade-long (9-year stretches each, to be exact) non-championship eras quite comparable to each other. It doesn't look like there's another such period of that give-or-take length without a title that's up to par with these two. You can think about the Colts of the entire '60s (between '59 and SBV) or the Browns from '56-thru-'63/'65-thru-'73; but without actually looking up each and every season, I already can safely assume it's not up with Oak & NE.

This is a year-by-year comparison (post-season record in parenthesis) between the Raiders & Pats in each of the nine-year stretches offered above...

'67 Raiders 13-1 (1-1, lost SB), '05 Patriots 10-6 (1-1, lost div rd)
'68 Raiders 12-2 (0-1, lost LCG), '06 Patriots 12-4 (1-1, lost CCG)
'69 Raiders 12-1-1 (1-1, lost LCG), '07 Patriots 16-0 (2-1, lost SB)
'70 Raiders 8-4-2 (1-1, lost CCG), '08 Patriots 11-5 (no playoff berth)
'71 Raiders 8-4-2 (no playoff berth), '09 Patriots 10-6 (0-1, lost 1st rd)
'72 Raiders 10-3-1 (0-1, lost div rd), '10 Patriots 14-2 (0-1, lost div rd)
'73 Raiders 9-4-1 (1-1, lost CCG), '11 Patriots 13-3 (2-1, lost SB)
'74 Raiders 12-2 (1-1, lost CCG), '12 Patriots 12-4 (1-1, lost CCG)
'75 Raiders 11-3 (1-1, lost CCG), '13 Patriots 12-4 (1-1, lost CCG)

Raiders: 95-24-7 reg season, 6-8 post-season, 101-32-3 total
Patriots: 110-34 reg season, 8-8 post-season, 118-42 total

Thoughts?

Lol, this thread is only further demonstrating how unbelievable the Patriots dynasty has been when we are comparing the time period where they didn't win any championships to the Madden Raiders.

The '69-'77 Vikings come close. That 7-7 season is what puts them below these two teams. Five losses that season by a combined 13 points. They played the two Super Bowl teams that season losing to the Redskins by 3 in the opener and two weeks later by 2 vs. the Dolphins

Four of those 1972 losses came in the final two minutes:

*Miami scored the winning touchdown with 1:28 left.
*St. Louis scored the winning touchdown with 1:38 left and Fred Cox's 26-yard FG attempt struck the right crossbar at the gun.
*Against Chicago on MNF, the Vikings' winning score with 27 seconds left was nullified by a penalty and then Cox managed to miss a 27-yard FG that would have gotten them a tie.
*49ers score the winning touchdown with 25 seconds left and Cox missed a 43-yard FG attempt at the gun, which would have managed a tie.

I definitely should have at least mentioned the Vikings in the original post. ’69-thru-’77 a thicker body-of-work than those Browns and Colts examples I offered. Four Super Bowls! How can I not? ’67-thru-’80 Rams also a better example than Browns or Colts; and quite a lengthy run to boot!

Dolphins from ’74-thru-’03 perhaps not as compact (mostly mere ‘good, not-great’ teams), but a non-title run worth mentioning. 17 out of 30 in that stretch making the playoffs; but 6 of those 13 non-qualifiers having a winning record, and five of them finishing 8-8! Which brings us to just TWO losing seasons (’76 & ’88) in three decades! Yes, worth a mention!

EDIT -

'69 - 12-2 (1-1, lost SB)
'70 - 12-2 (0-1, div rd loss)
'71 - 11-3 (0-1, div rd loss)
'72 - 7-7
'73 - 12-2 (2-1, lost SB)
'74 - 10-4 (2-1, lost SB)
'75 - 12-2 (0-1, div rd loss)
'76 - 11-2-1 (2-1, lost SB)
'77 - 9-5 (1-1, lost CCG)

96-29-1 reg season, 8-8 post-season, 104-37-1 total. Hmm? Yes, not only should I have mentioned Vikings in the OP, and not only should I have included them in the header with Oak & NE, but that very body-of-work after giving it a better look and those very four SBs should place them over both! And, yes, Rams did have that 3-year playoff-drought '70-thru-'72 (though they did finish 9-4-1 & 8-5-1 in '70 & '71 respectively); but maybe I should have included them in the header as well.

That 1972 Vikings season was a major aberration for the 1969-76 team defenses. In those other seven years, they allowed an average of 162 points per game. In '72, they allowed 252.

From 1969-71, they gave up the fewest points in the league. In the other four years, they were either second or third. In 72, they were 11th.
