Re: 1959 Packers

Thanks for the tip. Somebody put out a book years back that contained contemporaneous scouting reports of current and prospective Packers from that era. Nitschke was such a handful that they were just dying for an excuse to get rid of him. It's fun to read how little scouts sugar-coated their repor...

Re: Pittsburgh convention photo

I dunno. That ain't so bad. You oughta see my driver's license photo. Got a bad case of pillow hair, one eye's half-closed, and overall looks like I've just been shocked with a cattle prod.

Re: Bates' UFL field goal

I once saw my dad kick my brother in the ass after he came home with a dent in his brand new Dodge. I swear he sailed at least 60 yards.

However, with four knucklehead sons, it wasn't my dad's first kick.

Re: '58 Browns, and hypo they-vs-Colts NFLCG

I haven't got time to look it up, but in the real 1958 title game, the Colts had a chance to blow it wide open, 21-3, but I think they ran Ameche on a fourth down from the 1-yd line and he got smothered on what was supposed to be an option pass. Why anybody thought that was a good idea is beyond me,...

Re: '58 Browns, and hypo they-vs-Colts NFLCG

A hypothetical Colts-Browns 1958 NFLCG is one I've often thought about. I think the Colts would have won, probably a close game but Unitas would give them the edge. The Browns could have won. The next year they played in Baltimore with the Browns winning 38-31. The Browns led 31-17 at the end of th...

Re: '58 Browns, and hypo they-vs-Colts NFLCG

Well, with the immortal Milt Plum at the helm vs. Johnny U & Co. in their prime, I figure the final score would be something like Colts 35-7. Here's Milt's composite postseason numbers from 1957 (lost 59-14 to Detroit) and '58 (lost to NYG 10-0): 12-24, 134 yards, 4 picks, 0 TD, 27.4 QB rating. ...

Re: Goal Posts

Anecdotally...I remember once reading somewhere (maybe an article from the '30s or '40s) that the reason the NFL didn't move the posts to the back of the EZ (as college teams had, evidently sometime in the '20s) was because it wanted to cut down on the number of tie games. Placekicking being what it...

Re: Goal Posts

Good question, and a good subject for a Coffin Corner article.

btw---that's the Dairy Bowl, the stadium inside the Milwaukee Mile racetrack that GB used to play in during the '30s and '40s. Don't know if that had anything at all to do with it. Let our Packers experts chime in.

We've always had dogs. So basically we don't have a lawn but a lunar landscape.
