Flag football at the Olympics

Post by Crazy Packers Fan »

So, flag football is going to be at the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles. It'll probably be a one-time thing, since it's a sport picked by the home nation, though I'd love for it to become a permanent event. How is the NFL going to factor in the men's competition? Are they going to send NFL players to LA to participate, or are they just going to pick the best flag footballers from various minor leagues? The NBA doesn't send its players to the 3x3 tournament, even though I'm sure they'd crush the competition (and the team the U.S. sent was eliminated far before the medal round).

The other question is where they're going to play it. Flag football wasn't included in the original venue plan, so we don't know where they'll put it. Pretty much every large stadium in the area is taken by a different sport. SoFi - swimming, Coliseum - track, Rose Bowl - soccer, etc. And I'm sure if NFL players do participate, those will become the hottest tickets in the Games. So they should find a pretty good home for the event.

What are your thoughts on it being included? Is this a boon for the NFL, or is this the beginning of the end of tackle football like all the NFL doomsayers think? I think it's a great thing, personally. And if all goes right, maybe I'll get to see it in person.

I immediately tried to picture Jim Thorpe playing flag football at the 1912 Olympics. Or break dancing, for that matter.

But since I'm not into the Olympics, they could have a 3-legged potato sack race and that would be fine with me.
