We all know that Tom Matte (#41) and Ed Rutkowski (#40) started games at QB for their teams (Colts and Bills, respectively). But they were disaster QBs. Can anyone identify another QB--since 1960 and whose regular position was QB--who started a regular season game with a jersey number in the 40s? And what number did he wear?

Good one!

And speaking of disaster QBs, wouldn't Ryan Leaf qualify (no matter what number he wore)?

Sid Luckman wore #42, but he was far from a disaster QB.

Reaser--excellent answer! And now I must admit to a mistake myself. I was, for some reason, thinking Connerly was already retired by then, but was experiencing a brain cramp. There is one more QB who wore a number in the 40s, and he played after the Marlboro Man ...

Bob--yes, the title would fit leaf, but for a different reason!

Bob Scrabis wore 46 for the NY Titans in 1960...someone should write a book about stuff like this.

Yes John, if only ...
And that is one I was unaware of ... the answer I was looking for was George Wilson Jr., who wore 48 for Miami in 1966.

So we have three QBs wearing numbers in the 40s after 1960. Am I missing any more?

I wonder why this is? Did they start off as DBs or RBs and then gradually switch positions? Much like Devin Hester playing WR wearing #23.
I think numbering standardizations started in the late 50s or early 60s?

I think I remember Joe Morrison taking a few snaps and, in a couple of Programs, was listed as HB/QB?
(Need Mike Moran to the rescue here...)
