Forty Niners vs 49ers

It seems that up until the 1970s, Forty Niners was used in print more than 49ers. Did the team have an "official" spelling of the team name at anytime?

I know that Forty Niners was written on the back of the players bench jackets and capes during the 1981 Super Bowl season and possibly in seasons after.
